How to Build a Hot Wheels Display Case for the Wall

A full afternoon build for a wall-mounted 1:64 display case — cut list, exact shelf spacing, the front-lip trick, finishing, and how to hang it level.

Give it an afternoon and about thirty bucks in pine and you've got a wall-mounted Hot Wheels case. Two numbers make or break the whole thing. You want 1.5 inches of clear air between shelves and a 1/4-inch lip running along the front of every one. The gap is what lets you pinch a 1:64 car out without knocking over the three sitting next to it. The lip is what keeps cars on the shelf instead of on the carpet — and they end up on the carpet, trust me, because these things roll the second someone leans on the wall or lets a door slam.

The rest of this is the whole build. Cut list, spacing, glue-up, finish, hanging. Get the gap and the lip right and honestly everything else is just cutting straight lines.

    Tools and materials

    What you're building is an open shadow box — a pine frame, fixed shelves, a plywood back, and a cleat to hang it off. Mine runs 24 inches wide, 12 tall, five shelves. That holds around 35 cars lined up side-on, or you can cram in roughly 75 nose-out. Change the width to suit your wall. The shelf math doesn't budge.

    Saw first. A miter saw is ideal, but a hand saw and a cheap miter box cut just as straight if you take your time. You'll also want a drill/driver, a brad nailer (or a hammer and a nail set), and the usual suspects — tape, pencil, square, level. Here's the list for the 24-inch version:

    • Two sides: 1x3 pine at 12 in each.
    • Then the crossways boards. Six lengths of 1x3 cut to 22.5 in, which covers the top, the bottom, and all four interior shelves.
    • One back panel, 24 x 12 in, from quarter-inch plywood or MDF — either's fine.
    • Front lips: five strips of screen molding or lattice at 22.5 in. That's one for the bottom board plus one per interior shelf.
    • Wood glue, a box of 1.25-in brads, and a handful of 1.25-in screws (the screws are what stop the pine splitting).
    • Wood filler. 120- and 220-grit paper.
    • For the finish, go either primer and paint, or stain and a wipe-on poly. Your call.
    • To hang it: a French cleat, or two D-ring hangers and picture wire if that's what's in the drawer — plus rated wall anchors or 2.5-in screws.
    • Lumber-wise, two or three 8-ft 1x3 boards give you all the pine with scrap to spare.

    The numbers that matter for 1:64 cars

    Mainline Hot Wheels are 1:64. That's roughly 2.5 to 3 inches long, an inch or so wide, and most of them sit under an inch tall. The oddballs are what set your spacing. Trucks, big rear wings, roll bars — those shove some castings up near 1.25 inches. And because the wheels actually spin, nothing stays put on a flat shelf. Two facts. Every dimension in the table below traces back to them.

    Lock your size and cut list

    Start at the wall, not the cars. Measure the space you're filling, then pick an outside width. I go 24 inches because it splits cleanly into 3-inch slots for side-on cars. The height just falls out of how many shelves you want.

    Every row of cars needs that 1.5-inch clear opening, and each 1x3 shelf swallows 0.75 inch of height. So five rows works out like this: 5 openings x 1.5 in + 4 interior shelves x 0.75 in = 10.5 in inside, then add the 0.75-in top and bottom boards and you land at a 12-inch case. Interior width is 24 in minus the two 0.75-in sides, which is 22.5 — that's why every crossways board gets cut to 22.5. Write the whole thing down before the saw's even plugged in. Trust me on that one.

    Cut every piece

    Two sides to 12 inches. Six horizontals — top, bottom, and four shelves — to 22.5. Back panel to 24 x 12, and the five lip strips to 22.5.

    Sand the cut ends right now, while everything's still loose and you can spin each piece in your hand. Do it after glue-up and you'll be cursing into corners the sandpaper won't reach. Then dry-fit the whole box on a flat table, no glue yet. A shelf that's even 1/16 long racks the case out of square, and you want to catch that now — not after the brads are in and it's permanent.

    Mark the shelf lines

    Set the two side boards next to each other, inside faces up, ends dead flush. From the bottom, mark 0.75 in for the top of the bottom board. After that it's a rhythm: up 1.5 for the opening, up 0.75 for the shelf, up 1.5, up 0.75, all the way to the top.

    Run your speed square across both boards in one pass so the marks line up exactly. Off by a hair on one side and the shelf tilts — then every car on it leans like it's parked on a hill. Draw the full line, not a little tick, and scribble an X on the face the board butts against. Makes the glue-up idiot-proof.

    Glue and nail the box together

    Bead of glue on both ends of a shelf. Set it on its line between the sides. Then two 1.25-inch brads through the outside of each side into the end of the shelf. The brads are just there to hold things while the glue does the real work — but add one pre-drilled 1.25-inch screw per joint too, or the pine will split on you the first time the case takes real weight.

    Build the bottom shelf first and work up. Once it's all together, check for square: framing square in a corner, or measure both diagonals across the face. Diagonals match, you're square. Clamp it and walk away for 30 minutes so the glue sets before you move anything.

    Add the back panel

    Flip the case face-down. Glue along every back edge — both sides, the top, the bottom, all four shelves — then drop the 1/4-inch plywood on, flush to the outside.

    Brads every 4 to 6 inches, 3/4 or 1 inch long, and make sure you're catching each shelf so the panel ties the whole grid together. That back earns its keep twice. It locks the case square for good, and it's your backdrop. Paint it something that fights the cars — more on color in a minute — and the diecast jumps forward off it.

    Glue on the front lips

    Here's the one everybody skips, then regrets about a week later when cars start hitting the floor. I'll say it again: cars roll. Glue a 1/4-inch strip of screen molding or lattice along the front top edge of every shelf that carries cars — five strips for this build — standing maybe 1/4 to 3/8 inch proud of the surface.

    A couple of pin nails hold each strip while the glue grabs. That little ridge is the whole difference between a display and a heap of loose castings on the carpet the next time somebody slams the front door.

    Fill, sand, and finish

    Fill the nail holes and any gaps in the end grain, let the filler dry hard, then sand — 120 first, then 220. Knock the sharp front edges over a touch so the case feels finished instead of like raw lumber.

    Now the look. Primer and two coats of paint reads clean and modern; stain plus a wipe-on polyurethane keeps the pine grain showing through. Whichever way you go, paint that back panel a color that contrasts your cars — flat black or bright white both make diecast paint snap. And let the finish cure all the way before you load it. Fresh paint and rubber tires bond to each other, and you'll peel a car up leaving a scar on the shelf if you rush it. Ask me how I know.

    Hang it with a French cleat

    A French cleat is the strongest way to hang this and the most forgiving if your level's a hair off. Take a strip of 1x3 and rip it at 45 degrees down its length. Screw one half to the back of the case, bevel pointing up and in. Screw the other half to the wall, bevel up and out. Now the case just drops down and locks itself on.

    Hunt for a stud with a magnet or a stud finder and sink the wall cleat into it with 2.5-inch screws. Bare drywall, no stud in reach? Rated anchors, no shortcuts. Level the wall cleat before you drive it home, because the cleat sets the level, not the case — the case only hangs there. Two D-rings and picture wire will hold something this light too, but the wire goes crooked every time a kid yanks a car off the shelf. The cleat won't.

    Load the cars

    Pick side-on or nose-out and stick with it down each shelf — mix the two on one row and it just looks messy. Side-on shows off the casting's whole profile and reads like a proper collection. Nose-out fits way more and works great for a themed row, a full series lined up grille-first.

    Start at one end and space them even so the last car isn't jammed against the side of the case. One thing you'll notice fast: premium cars on real rubber tires grip the shelf and stay put, while the mainline plastic wheels roll at the slightest nudge — which is the exact reason that lip from Step 6 keeps earning its spot.

    Three upgrades if you want to go further

    • Want it sealed? Drop a sheet of 1/8-in acrylic into a rabbeted front frame and the open box becomes a dust-proof one. Leave it open and you're wiping shelves every couple of weeks. Cover it and you forget they're there for months.
    • Lighting is the cheap one that punches way above its cost. A warm-white USB LED strip stuck under the top board lights the whole grid — diecast reads dead flat in shadow, and the second a little light rakes across it the paint wakes up.
    • One heads-up if you keep cars on the card: they won't fit. A carded Hot Wheels stands about 6.5 inches tall, so this build's a non-starter for those. You'd want a separate case with 1x6 shelves and 7-inch openings.

    Quick answers

    How deep should each shelf be? Inch and a half, minimum. A 1:64 car sits about an inch deep on its wheels, so 1.5 inches — a 1x2 — holds it with a little margin, and 2.5 inches (a 1x3) gives you more to work with.

    How much gap between shelves? A 1.5-inch clear opening. Most cars clear an inch fine, but spoilers and trucks push to about 1.25, and you still need finger room to lift one out without dominoing the whole row.

    How do you stop the cars rolling off? A 1/4-inch lip on the front of every shelf. The free-rolling wheels are the entire problem; the lip is the entire fix.

    How many cars fit per shelf? On a 22.5-inch shelf, about 7 side-on or 15 nose-out. Call it 35 to 75 for the whole five-shelf, 24-inch case, depending which way you point them.
