How to Test a Power Wheels Battery With a Multimeter

The fast version: charge it, rest it, then read it with a multimeter. A healthy 12V sits at 12.6–12.8V and a 24V pack at 25.2–25.6V. Then load-test it, because a resting number can lie.

Multimeter on DC volts. Red probe to the positive terminal, black to negative. A healthy 12V Power Wheels battery that's topped off and rested will show you somewhere between 12.6 and 12.8 volts; a 24V pack lands around 25.2 to 25.6. That's the whole easy part.

Anything under about 12.0V (or 24V on the big two-seater packs) isn't a death sentence — it's just low. Charge it. The reading that actually matters comes after: if the pack won't climb even after a long charge, or the number craters the second the motors start pulling, it's finished. No charger brings one back from that. I've tried, twice, on the same red Jeep.

    What you need

    • A digital multimeter — the $15 AstroAI or Klein off the hardware-store peg does everything here. You don't need a Fluke.
    • The right charger. 6V, 12V, and 24V chargers don't cross over, and grabbing the wrong one is how people cook a perfectly good battery.
    • The ride-on itself, or just the battery yanked out of it.
    • Something to lift the drive wheels for the load test — two scrap 2x4s under the frame, or one kid-free adult to hold the back end up.

    What the numbers should read

    These are sealed lead-acid batteries — same chemistry as the slab under your car's hood, just shrunk down — so they ride the same voltage curve. Match whatever your meter shows against this:

    One catch. Fresh off the charger, a battery holds a surface charge that reads 13V and change (26V+ on a 24V) for the first hour or so. Don't trust that number. Let it sit.

    Set the meter to DC volts

    Dial to DC voltage — the V with a straight line and a dashed line over it, not the squiggly one. Pick the squiggly AC symbol and you'll read pure nonsense. Cheaper manual-range meter? Set it to 20V for a 6V or 12V battery, 200V for a 24V pack. Auto-ranging meters sort themselves out. Red lead in the VΩ jack, black in COM, and that's the setup done.

    Charge it fully, then let it rest

    A resting reading only means something on a battery that's genuinely rested. Obvious once you say it out loud, ignored by almost everyone. Charge it first. Fisher-Price calls for up to 18 hours on a new or deeply drained pack, and never past about 30 hours on the old chargers that don't shut themselves off. Then unplug and walk away — an hour bare minimum, overnight if you can swing it. That downtime lets the surface charge bleed off. Rush it and the meter hands you a flattering 13.2V that evaporates the moment anything draws on it.

    Reach the terminals

    Get to the terminals — lift the seat or pull the battery out of its compartment, depending on the model. Kill the car's power switch first so nothing's drawing current while your hands are down there. You can touch the two terminals inside the connector directly. If they're buried where a probe won't reach, backprobe the harness plug from behind instead.

    Read the resting voltage

    Red on positive, black on negative, both pressed firmly onto clean metal — corrosion or a lazy touch skews the reading. Now check it against the table. A 12V that settles at 12.6 to 12.8? Full, healthy, done. Sitting near 12.0V means it's down to roughly a quarter tank. Under 11.8V it's flat. Flat isn't dead, though — recharge and read it again before you condemn it, because a deeply discharged battery and a truly finished one look nothing alike once they've had a real charge.

    Load-test it (don't skip this one)

    This is the step people skip, and it's the one that catches the liars. Resting voltage lies. A worn-out pack will sit there flashing a confident 12.6V and then fold the instant the motors ask it for actual current. The only way to expose that is to make it work.

    Hook everything back up and get the drive wheels off the ground — two blocks under the frame, or someone holding the back end up. Leave your probes on the terminals. Switch it on, hold the pedal down, let the wheels spin free in the air. Watch the meter, not the wheels. A good 12V sags a little and holds around 11V or better. See it plunge toward 10V while the wheels barely turn? That pack's spent — buy a new one. A 24V follows the same logic: it should stay in the low-to-mid 20s, and a nosedive toward 20V under throttle means it's cooked too.

    Charge, replace, or blame the charger

    It shakes out three ways. One: reads full, holds under load — you're finished, hand it back to the kid. Two: reads low but climbs to 12.6V and stays there after a full charge — nothing wrong with it, it was just run down. Three: won't get past about 12V even after 12 to 18 hours plugged in, or aces the resting test and then collapses the second there's load on it. That third one's done. These lead-acid packs give you one to three years and not much more, so an old battery that won't hold isn't broken so much as retired.

    One thing to rule out before you drop money on a replacement — the charger itself. Meter on DC volts, plug the charger into the wall with nothing else connected, and touch your probes to its output pins. A working 12V charger reads north of 12V with no load, often anywhere from 13 up to 18V, because these little transformers run high until a battery pulls them down. A dead-flat zero means the charger quit, not the battery. That's the cheap fix, and the one worth hoping for.

    A couple of safety notes

    • Never let a wrench, a ring, or both probes bridge the two terminals at once. Even a battery this small can dump enough current to spark, weld metal, and burn you — there's a scorch mark on one of my old screwdrivers that says so.
    • Charge somewhere with air moving, and never on carpet or a bench covered in sawdust. Lead-acid packs can vent gas.
    • Swollen, cracked, or leaking? Don't test it and don't charge it. Drop it at a hardware or auto-parts store that takes lead-acid cores for recycling.
